For Immediate Release:
UDOT to give media first-hand look at unique cranes in action on I-15 in Murray
Gantry cranes being used for the first time on Utah freeway construction as part of I-15 widening in Salt Lake County
WHAT: Gantry cranes are being used for the first time on a Utah freeway as part of the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT)’s I-15 Southbound project. Media will have the opportunity to get an up-close look at how gantry cranes are used within the work zone.
With both traffic and trains in the mix, the I-15 SB work zone space is extremely limited and complicated. These cranes help safely demolish and construct bridge structures while reducing traffic delays.
Gantry cranes are lighter than traditional cranes but have the same lifting capacity and can fit into confined spaces. On this project the cranes will (1) remove a 700-foot-long steel bridge support weighing 1 million pounds and (2) move 1.4 million pounds of concrete – heavier than the world’s heaviest airplane (the Antonov AN-255, which weighs 1.28 million pounds).
WHEN: POSTPONED – Thursday, Aug. 22, at 9:30 a.m.
WHERE: Meet at UDOT Maintenance Shed #2432, 5823 Commerce Commerce Dr, Murray, UT A shuttle will then transport media to the work zone in the middle of I-15 SB. To enter the work zone participants must wear long pants and closed toed shoes. Personal protection equipment will be provided and must be worn in the work zone.
