NEWS RELEASE: Alternative to Phase 1 Transit proposed for the Mountain View Corridor

For Immediate Release

Express Bus Service Proposed as New Phase 1 Transit Alternative for Mountain View Corridor

Public invited to review and comment on proposed Express Bus service April 17 – May 16

SALT LAKE CITY (April 17, 2019) – The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) are proposing an Express Bus service as an alternative concept for Phase 1 Transit of the Mountain View Corridor Record of Decision (ROD). The public can review and comment on this new proposal from April 17 to May 16, 2019.

The Mountain View Corridor ROD committed to constructing and operating a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system on 5600 West from 6200 South to 2700 South. This BRT line is required before future highway phases of Mountain View Corridor can be constructed. The Mountain View Corridor project team worked with UTA, the Wasatch Front Regional Council, Salt Lake County, local cities and stakeholders to develop an alternative express bus service concept to replace the BRT system as outlined in the ROD.

The newly proposed express bus service will be six times longer than the proposed BRT route (29 miles for Express Bus, versus 5 miles for BRT), from Old Bingham Highway to downtown Salt Lake City), and will serve four cities – West Jordan, Kearns, West Valley City and Salt Lake City (including the Salt Lake City International Airport and downtown) – instead of two. The Express Bus service is projected to have a higher ridership than BRT, and will cost less than BRT to build, operate and maintain.

The Phase I Transit Proposal can be reviewed online at  http://udot.utah.gov/mountainview. Hard copies will also be available at the Mountain View Corridor offices (3959 West 1820 South, STE 200 in Salt Lake City). Comments may be submitted electronically on the project website, udot.utah.gov/mountainview, or by emailing  mountainview@utah.gov. Written comments may also be submitted at the Mountain View Corridor offices.

The comment period provides an opportunity for members of the public to review and comment on this proposal. After the ROD is revised, funding will need to be identified in order to build, operate and maintain the proposed Express Bus service.

For Mountain View Corridor updates, follow the project’s social media accounts:

  • Twitter: @UDOTMVC
  • Facebook: @MountainViewCorridor
  • Instagram: @mountainview_corridor

The environmental review, consultation, and other actions required by applicable Federal environmental laws for this project are being, or have been, carried-out by UDOT pursuant to 23 U.S.C. 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated Jan 17, 2017, and executed by FHWA and UDOT.
