Media Briefing: Wildlife Overpass to Open in Parley’s Canyon

UDOT to open the state’s first overpass built solely for wildlife crossings

Media are invited to tour Utah’s first overpass built solely for wildlife crossings. The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) constructed the overpass, which spans six lanes of interstate, to improve safety on I-80 by reducing wildlife and vehicle collisions.

UDOT coordinated with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) on the wildlife issues specific to the project, including wildlife migration patterns and habitat and overpass length and width requirements.

The wildlife overpass is one of several new improvements on I-80 in Parleys Canyon to enhance safety, including a new truck lane to help move slower, heavier vehicles away from faster-moving traffic as well as cattle guard and wildlife fencing to help encourage wildlife to utilize the new crossing.

Thursday, Dec. 13, at 10 a.m.

Exit 140 (Parleys Summit) on the westbound I-80 on-ramp

Directions: From I-80 East, take Exit 140 (Parleys Summit). Then take a left at the bottom of the off-ramp and continue to the I-80 West on-ramp. Park on the shoulder of the on-ramp. UDOT will drive media to the top of the overpass.

* Please dress warm and wear closed-toed, sturdy shoes and pants to access the bridge.
