For Immediate Release:

UDOT warns: the scariest part of Halloween is pedestrian crashes

Crash survivors emphasize the need for trick-or-treaters to be seen and safe this Halloween

WHAT:

In 2015, four Utahns, including three children under the age of four, were hit in a crosswalk while trick-or-treating. Two years later, the family will gather at the crash site with the Utah Department of Transportation to share their story in hopes of encouraging everyone to stay safe this Halloween and always.

October is the deadliest month in Utah for pedestrian crashes. Dusk, dawn and dark hours increase the risk for an auto-pedestrian crash. Nearly half of all Utah pedestrian fatalities happen between the hours of 6 p.m. and midnight.

WHERE:

400 East 2100 South, Salt Lake City (location of the 2015 crash)

WHEN:

Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at 9:30 a.m.

WHO:

  • Parent hit by the truck: Keith Simmon

  • Children hit by the truck: Eleanor Simmon, Frederick Simmon and Tovah Davis

  • Witnesses of the crash: Anna Simmon, Brett and Amy Davis

VISUALS:

  • Children in their Halloween costumes

  • The same intersection where the crash occurred in 2015

  • Reflective gear and lights display: reflective gear, stickers, lights and other simple solutions for trick-or-treaters of all ages

NEWS RELEASE: UDOT and FHWA Release Record of Decision for West Davis Corridor

UDOT and FHWA Release Record of Decision for West Davis Corridor

FHWA approves UDOT’s preferred alternative for new road in Davis/Weber counties

SALT LAKE CITY (Oct. 3, 2017) — The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) today released the Record of Decision (ROD) for the West Davis Corridor. The ROD is the final step in the Environmental Impact Statemet (EIS) process.

The ROD approves UDOT’s preferred alternative for a new 19-mile highway from Farmington to West Point, connecting with I-15 and Legacy Parkway at Glovers Lane on the south end, and S.R. 37 (1800 North) at approximately 4000 West on the north end. The new highway will improve mobility through 2040 in western Davis and Weber counties.

“This decision has been reached carefully and with great respect for the collaborative efforts of thousands of stakeholders over several years,” UDOT Project Manager Randy Jefferies said. “We will continue working closely with cities, agencies, and other stakeholders as we move into the more detailed design for this new corridor.”

The ROD includes responses to comments received regarding the Final EIS for the West Davis Corridor. In addition, the document outlines specific requirements for mitigation that must be met during design and construction of the corridor. The ROD is available for review on the project website, http://udot.utah.gov/westdavis.

The Utah Transportation Commission recently approved funding for construction of the first phase of the West Davis Corridor – from Farmington to Syracuse. Design and property acquisition for the highway will take place in 2018 and 2019, followed by construction starting in 2020. This first phase of the new corridor is anticipated to be open by 2022.
